Message from the Principal
Dr Ron Roukema, interim head of school

At Hong Kong International School (HKIS), there is a strong sense of mission which is centred on academic excellence, spiritual exploration, and compassionate service. This guides everything we do and is based on the belief that education is about shaping character, not just mastering course content.

Therefore, students are encouraged to reflect, engage, and lead with purpose. And the school’s core values are woven into daily life through service learning, intentional programmes, and a nurturing community culture.

This is all part of a commitment to the all-round development of every student, starting from our early childhood programme through to Grade 12.

In the primary school, play and inquiry are designed to spark curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. The middle school years build on this foundation with the help of a strong social-emotional curriculum, which fosters self-awareness and empathy. And, in high school, students have all the benefits of a wide-ranging and versatile academic programme, including 26 advanced placement (AP) courses, as well as opportunities to lead clubs and take part in sports, arts, and all kinds of extracurricular activities.

Along the way, they learn about the importance of building relationships and making a meaningful contribution to society, and that prepares graduates for whatever they decide to do next.

At HKIS, our teachers foster curiosity and resilience. They help students discover their passions and develop the skills needed in a complex world. That can be done in class, through collaborative projects, outdoor education, by giving responsibility, and by supporting intellectual and emotional growth.

In providing an American-style education grounded in the Christian faith, we see learning as a journey of self-discovery, guided by values and driven by purpose. We don’t just prepare students for university; we prepare them for life.
